WhatsApp Status Saver for Android — Videos, Photos, Business (2026)

WhatsApp Statuses are meant to disappear. Their whole design says "ephemeral — 24 hours and it's gone." That's fine most of the time. But sometimes someone posts an address you need, a photo of a family event, or a delivery tracking screenshot — and you want to keep it before the window closes.

The dozens of "Status Saver" apps that used to work on Android are mostly broken now. Google's scoped storage changes in Android 11 (and tightened again in Android 13+) locked down the folder those apps depended on. Half the guides online still tell you to install tools that stopped working two years ago.

This is the honest, current guide to saving WhatsApp Status videos and photos on Android in 2026 — including WhatsApp Business, in original quality, without screenshots or screen recording.

Why old status saver apps stopped working

Understanding this helps because most competing guides won't tell you.

WhatsApp downloads every status you view into a hidden folder on your phone:

Internal storage → Android → media → com.whatsapp → WhatsApp → Media → .Statuses

That folder was freely accessible until Android 11 (2020), when Google introduced scoped storage — an OS-level lock that limits which apps can read which folders. On Android 13+, the rules tightened further: apps can no longer see or list other apps' Android/data directories at all without explicit user permission.

Practical result: legacy "Status Saver" apps that assumed free folder access silently break. You install them, open them, see an empty screen, and assume the app is broken or that WhatsApp hid the file. Neither is true. The file is still there — the app just can't read it anymore under the new OS rules.

The only way it works in 2026 is if the app uses Android's Storage Access Framework (SAF) — a permission dialog that asks you to explicitly point at the WhatsApp Status folder once, granting the app permission to read it going forward. Method 1 — Save via Savesta

The straightforward path.

1. View the status inside WhatsApp. Just tap it and watch. The moment you view a status, WhatsApp copies the file to your phone's private .Statuses folder. Viewed statuses = saveable.
2. Open Savesta and tap Status. First time only: Android prompts you to grant folder access to the WhatsApp Status directory. You'll navigate to Android/media/com.whatsapp/WhatsApp/Media and pick .Statuses. This is a one-time step — Android remembers.
3. Browse the grid of viewed statuses. Every photo and video you watched in the last 24 hours appears as a thumbnail. Personal and WhatsApp Business statuses both show up.
4. Tap the status you want. Savesta copies it to Internal storage → Savesta → Status in its original resolution. Photos are JPG, videos are MP4, exactly as WhatsApp received them.

What about WhatsApp Business?

Business accounts save statuses to a different folder:

Internal storage → Android → media → com.whatsapp.w4b → WhatsApp Business → Media → .Statuses

Savesta handles both automatically. If you've viewed a WhatsApp Business status in the last 24 hours, it appears in Savesta's Status tab alongside personal statuses.

If you use only WhatsApp Business (not personal WhatsApp), grant folder access to the com.whatsapp.w4b path instead of com.whatsapp when the permission dialog appears.

Method 2 — Manual folder access (no third-party app)

If you don't want to install anything, the folder is technically accessible through Android's Files app — but with friction:

1. Open Google Files (or Samsung's My Files, or any file manager that supports SAF).
2. Navigate to Android/media/com.whatsapp/WhatsApp/Media.
3. Enable Show hidden files in the file manager's menu — the .Statuses folder starts with a dot, hiding it by default.
4. Tap .Statuses. Copy the file(s) you want elsewhere.

This works but takes 30+ seconds per status because filenames look like c3a97e6b-1f2c-4d21-a5c8-7e9b0f1a2d3e.jpg — you can't tell which status is which without opening each one.

What Savesta won't do (and no app can)

Being direct about the hard limits:

• Statuses you haven't viewed. WhatsApp only copies a status to .Statuses after you've viewed it. Unviewed statuses aren't saveable — the file isn't on your phone yet.
• Statuses older than 24 hours. WhatsApp deletes viewed statuses from .Statuses after 24 hours automatically. Save quickly.
• Text statuses. Text statuses (colored background + text) aren't files — WhatsApp renders them live from a short text string. There's no file to save. Screenshot is your only option, and honestly it's fine — a text status is trivial to screenshot.
• Voice statuses. WhatsApp added voice statuses in 2023. These aren't stored in .Statuses the same way videos are — WhatsApp handles them through the media store. Current status savers, Savesta included, focus on photo and video.

Auto-save every status you view

If you find yourself forgetting to save the good ones, Savesta has an Auto-save setting (off by default). Turn it on in Settings → Auto-save. Every status you view gets copied to Savesta's folder automatically.

Disk-cheap: a photo status is ~200 KB, a video status is ~2 MB. A month of typical viewing = ~50–100 MB. Savesta auto-cleans anything older than 30 days if you enable the cleanup option, keeping the folder from growing indefinitely.

Troubleshooting: empty status screen

If Savesta shows "No statuses" and you know you viewed some today, check three things:

1. Did you actually view the status inside WhatsApp? Just receiving one from a contact isn't enough — you have to tap and watch. Viewing triggers the file download.

2. Did WhatsApp finish downloading the status media? Slow connections sometimes leave a status half-loaded. Give it 30 seconds after viewing, then reopen Savesta.

3. Did you grant folder access to the correct path? Android 13+ requires explicit SAF permission to Android/media/com.whatsapp/WhatsApp/Media/.Statuses (or the com.whatsapp.w4b equivalent for Business). If you accidentally picked a different folder, revoke access in Android Settings → Apps → Savesta → Permissions and re-grant.

Saving your own status

For a status you posted yourself, the file is already in your gallery — WhatsApp saves your own uploads automatically. Look in Internal storage → WhatsApp Images or WhatsApp Video for the original. No third-party tool needed.

Common questions

Does the person know I saved their status? No. WhatsApp already tracks that you viewed the status (that's the "seen" indicator). Saving happens locally on your phone, invisible to WhatsApp.

Can I save statuses without appearing as "seen"? That's a different problem (anonymous status viewing) and outside what a status saver does. Requires viewing WhatsApp in a mode that doesn't send read receipts — a separate category of tool.

What quality does the saved file have? Exactly what WhatsApp sent to your phone. Savesta doesn't re-encode. Photo statuses are typically 1080p JPGs at ~200-500 KB. Video statuses are 480p–720p MP4s (WhatsApp caps status videos at 30 seconds and ~5 MB, applying their compression before your device receives them).

Why not screen record? Screen recording captures your display, not the source file. If your screen is 720p and the status was 1080p, you lose resolution. Notification banners, low-battery warnings, and incoming calls appear in the recording. Audio often records at lower bitrate. The folder-based method is always higher quality.

Can I download statuses from contacts who blocked me? No. Blocked = you can't view their statuses at all, so nothing lands in .Statuses for Savesta to read.

Is this legal? You're saving files WhatsApp already downloaded to your phone. You had permission to see them (the person shared them with you). Redistributing them without the poster's consent is a different question — that depends on what you do with the saved file.
